Every project reaches a point where the Production client gets too big to efficiently execute a standard client copy. This usually leads to copying the full Production database to the supporting environments (QA, TST, SBX, TRN, etc.) to conduct critical testing and training initiatives. When the database is relatively small, this process is only a minor inconvenience. However, as the database continues to grow, common problems plague this approach:

	The core team becomes accustomed to having the entire complement of Production data at their fingertips. The inability to refresh the Development system results in ineffective testing of changes in the proper environment. Storage cost grows and technology teams have to regularly juggle disk capacity to accommodate refresh schedules. Security of the organization’s data is jeopardized as it is copied over and over to less secure systems.

Gold Client offers a true alternative to this refresh paradigm by creating a fully functional, Production-like client without all the transactional data. Through the power of the Gold Client framework consisting of a categorized and organized Master Data table map, Gold Client uses an export-import process to very efficiently populate a Configuration copy of Production (or any client in the landscape) with Master data from Production (or other source). Effectively, the Basis team is able to create a “working baseline” of all essential non-transactional and Master SAP data. Because this process is managed at the client level, independent objects, such as ABAP Programs and Dictionary Structures are not affected. In addition, the impact on the change control process is lessened.
